Open Mic Night

After much discussion, planning, rehearsing and some stage nerves we held our 'Open Mic' night last Tuesday.

An already established event in many areas this was a first for our region. What is it? Well think Karaoke but take out the singing and insert reading - either poetry (of all descriptions) or prose.

I read a humourous extract from George Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia' regarding his involvement with the Spanish civil war and by way of contrast another humour piece from local writer Linda Palfreeman's 'Crisis in Catral'

A different evening with good participation from all and a few new talents discovered.

The next Open Mic will be early in 2011.

I attended the monthly Wordplay group meeting this morning and discovered that I had won the monthly short story competition for which a free breakfast is awarded. There maybe no such thing as a free lunch but there is a free breakfast - and I have eaten it!

The week has ended with the sad news that 'Platinum Page' has had to close despite Vivienne's brave attempts at launching a creative writing magazine she has been unable to establish it during this difficult financial climate.

50 Stories for Pakistan

My copy of the fund raising book for Pakistan arrived today from the American publishers. The BBC were reporting again this week how tragic things still are in Pakistan following the floods.

By co-incidence the draft of Writers Abroad anthology also arrived today - this will shortly be on its way to the publishers following lots of hard work from the group. My contribution is 'The Life of an Errant Expat' my spoof Don Quixote (with apologies to Cervantes) short story. More to follow.
