The Volvo Ocean Race starts from Alicante in October - but the pre-race excitement, publicity and marketing has already begun. This is Valencias next big event (after last weekends F1) It is a round the world race like no other! This is the 10th event and the 1st to start from a Mediterranean port. Look out for Septembers The Inland Magazine - the VOR is the subject of my article for that edition.

With the current financial crisis and high oil prices there have been many predictions of the end of cheap flying and demise of the low cost airlines. I was searching for a flight back to Spain from the south of England in October - my choices were: Flybe - Southampton to Alicante - 178 pds or Ryanair - Bournemouth (yes they have an airport) to Murcia for FREE! tricky choice. So I booked direct with Ryanair - who only now honour direct bookings.

Despite the Olympics deservedly grabbing the headlines - Well done Team UK, an incredible 15 golds so far - the UK football season has started. My team, Southampton FC, still have not found any backers and so have no money to invest in star players. After 2 games without a win it looks like another long season. Perhaps my attendance at a game in October will reverse their fortunes.

I have just loaded Skype - now I can call, via my computer, other Skype users for FREE and chat, message, send files etc. Or you can call through Skype from your computer to telephone lines at cheap rates. It is free to download and has been around a long while and so it is `safe´ There are other systems to (Yahoo) but probably more business users have Skype but the choice is yours - why pay for expensive phone calls when you can Skype for FREE - all you need to get is a headset/microphone and the free software and you are in business. You can even do video calls if you plug in a webcam(era)

This year is a scorcher - many of my friends who love the sun are struggling this year with the heat. Your body acclimatises and your blood thins (good for heart attack suffers) but this hot humid weather has made us all start looking forward to autumn! If this is Global Warming boy are we in trouble!

Especially when it is good, but we have to be able to take all kinds! You won't be surprised to learn that I was glad to receive this: `Hello Rob, just thought that we would let you know that we thoroughly enjoy your pages that appear in T.i.m, we especially enjoyed your article on the la Mata natural park and since reading it, ourselves and 6 friends have visited the park. We also really enjoy your new page that appears in TIM (magazine) Rob's bits and Bobs, very informative and great to read. When are you doing another article on Parks? as we really enjoyed these articles and its great to visit them for something to do. Keep up the great work. Regards Max and the mob in Castalla´ Thanks folks! Looks like it is back on with the walking boots and hit the parks but not until it cools down a bit!

`Living amongst the Costa Blancas surviving orange and lemon groves with the construction onslaught, temporarily halted, it is easy to forget the culture and buzz of large cities. We decided to have a change of scenery in Madrid for a few days and opted to fly from Alicante to Madrid with Spanair.........´
Also the 2nd of `Rob's Bits and Bobs´ page (see Pg 54) The entries are rolling in for my Top 10 lists.....
